Update on ICUK activities
Introduction from the Executive Director: Manyi Cristofoli
ICUK activities are well underway this year. The final funding rounds have taken place and a total of £2.79m in 39 Partnership Grant projects and 33 Proof-of-Concept projects have been awarded. Two ICUK PoC projects have been awarded prestigious International Collaboration Fund 2009 by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. Furthermore, at the recent Beijing Innovation Forum, the ICUK was praised highly by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology for facilitating Sino-British collaboration in innovation and commercialisation.
This year we will be holding a series of events in China to help UK academics identify innovation partners and commercialise joint technology in China. For these events, we are currently looking for UK technology-based company or HEI spin-outs with close-to-market technology or product to help break into the Chinese market. So if you are interested in commercialisation opportunties in China, please click here for further information.
Upcoming Events
Two events are being planned in China in order to find commercialisation partners for projects:
Ecological science, policy and management of inland waters: A China-UK workshop – Tuesday 23 June 2009 - Wuhan, China
Initiated by Prof. Alan Hildrew from Queen Mary, University of London and supported by ICUK, this workshop will be held in Wuhan Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Science. This workshop will gather leading experts in freshwater ecology research and environment protection from the insitutions in the UK and China
The workshop at Wuhan Institute Hydrobiology will be followed by visits to the Yangzi water quality monitoring site and Yuehe lake where major restoration work has been carried out in recent years, which will give an opportunity for the UK delegates to gain understanding of the environment management practices in China and the effort of the Chinese government into restoring the freshwater ecological environment.
This event aims to build a knowledge exchange platform to inspire joint research activities and to explore future knowledge transfer opportunities in the field of freshwater ecology.
Building A UK-China Partnership In Sustainable Energy and Environmental Technologies for Buildings - 11/12 September 2009, Beijing China
The forum is jointly organised by ICUK, University of Nottingham (UK), Tsinghua University (China) and China Academy of Building research (China). It aims to establish a platform for distinguished academia, industrial and governmental personnel from both the UK and China exchanging ideas and networking. International collaborations and technology transfer between the academics and industry in both China and UK will also be sought.
The forum will begin with introducing the current status and practice in sustainable energy and environment technologies for buildings. The latest research and development in this area will be discussed and the challenges and opportunities in the processes of development and applications will be highlighted.
Update on projects
Out of the 33 Proof-of-Concept projects that have been funded, 9 were previously Partnership Grants projects that had been applied for and completed. A few of these are highlighted below:
EMC testing of mobile communications platforms
Prof. Xiaodong Chen from Queen Mary, University of London and Prof. Jinsheng Yu from Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications (BUPT) have been collaborating on a project to provide a new class of high sensitivity and high resolution EMC test equipment. Currently there is a critical design issue for manufacturers of mobile communication platforms as there is no commercially available test equipment for measuring EMC with the required sensitivity and resolution to evaluate these subtle internal component interactions. However, with the £70k Proof-of-Concept funding awarded by the ICUK, the collaborators have been successful in providing a solution to this problem and have a commercial prototype ready. An industrial licence is being negotiated with UK companies.

Development of power laws and Bayesian belief networks for a digital forensics software system
Dr Richard Overill from King's College London and Dr K P Chow from University of Hong Kong have been working on a novel digital forensic software which will be used to fight the enormous and extensive problem of digital crime. With £81k of PoC and Partnership funding from the ICUK, a marketable prototype of novel software expert systems for digital crime tracing and evidence analysis is currently being developed and will be licensed to information security companies. The software system will be highly desirable to forensic labs, law enforcement agencies, and other information security companies dealing with digital crimes. The technology has attracted strong industry interests. Numerous enquiries have been received, and some companies have expressed keen interest in accessing the technology upon project completion.
